Description
The Metro NY Chapter of the US National Committee for UN Women is partnering with Microsoft NY to host the "Technology: Powering Change and Empowering Women" on Wednesday, May 17 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Microsoft Technology Center (11 Times Square, 6th Floor, Central Park West Room, New York, NY 10036).
Worldwide, 200 million more men than women have access to the internet, and women are 21% less likely to own a mobile phone. And while women make up about 40% of the global workforce, they only comprise 25% of the tech industry. Digital technology plays an integral role in disaster relief, political participation, health and economic development, and has dramatically changed the way we communicate and conduct business around the world. Yet, despite the ever-increasing importance of technology, women and girls everywhere are missing, underrepresented and dropping out from the technology field. Without access to technology, the skills needed to use technology, and the training to work in technology fields, girls and women are being left behind.
Program participants will learn from expert panelists about some effective ways that stakeholders are working together to help close the gender technology gap and to create a world where women and girls have equal access to technology and the skills to create and leverage the technological transformations underway. The panel will also focus on ways that technology is being used to drive change and empower the feminist movement in the United States and globally.
Expert panelists include:
• Anna Falth, Manager, Empower Women, UN Women
• Beverly Neufeld, President, PowHer New York and member of the NYC Commission on Gender Equity
• Ope Aladekomo, Senior Product Manager, McKinsey & Company, Technology and Digital Organization
• Melerick H. Mitchell, Talent Development Architect and Founder of Drive Influence
• Bev Hess, Senior Director IT for retail stores and leader of Microsoft’s global women’s committee
• Moderator: Melissa Marmol, Account Executive and leader of Microsoft’s NY women’s committee
The program will be preceded by the chapter’s business meeting at 6:00 PM, which will be convened to elect the board of directors for 2017–2019. Chapter members are invited to attend this meeting.
This event is free and open to the public. Donations are greatly appreciated. If you're interested in becoming a member of the Metro NY Chapter of the US National Committee for UN Women, please go here.
